More Than Mechanics: How the Right Pump Specialist Safeguards Your Operations
When it comes to pump systems, an unreliable subbie can be just as damaging as failing equipment. Choosing the right maintenance provider / installation specialist often means avoiding unnecessary downtime, disruptions, and costs (because when things go wrong, the costs can rapidly rise).
Discover what we believe makes a reliable partner—and how to spot the warning signs of one that’s not up to the job.
In this blog Joe Smith, Operations Manager at deckpro, shares his advice on what to look for in a pump maintenance provider, what tools and expertise are essential, and why cutting corners is never worth the risk.
What Does It Take to Maintain Your Pumps?
Complacency isn't really an option when it comes to pump systems. Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) regimes are critical and often require specialise equipment, knowledge, hands-on expertise, and adherence to safety standards.
Yet we often get called to sites where the incumbent supplier has done a sub-par job which has led to inefficient operations or premature pump failure. To avoid that, there are signs to help you spot a reliable partner from a rooky one.
Thorough Inspections: Are your subbies taking the time to properly inspect your pump system? Submersible pumps, for example, must be removed from their chambers for a full inspection. This helps identify any hidden issues that can escalate into costly failures. Booster pumps making unusual noises should be isolated and dismantled to identify the source of the problem.
Qualified Engineers: Do the engineers have the necessary certifications to carry out the job? A reliable partner will ensure their engineers have up-to-date training, relevant health and safety qualifications, and the expertise to assess issues thoroughly, provide accurate solutions, and offer clients clear options for the most effective outcome.. In some cases, they’ll require additional qualifications to handle specific checks.
Specialised Equipment: Are the subbies using the correct and compliant equipment? Inspections can often require specialist lifting or safety equipment, which must comply with LOLER regulations and manufacturer guidelines. Electrical testing equipment should also meet category requirements and be calibrated regularly to ensure accuracy.
What to Look for in a Reliable Partner
The right subbie does more than just tick boxes—they become an integral part of your risk management strategy.
1. Risk Management Focus: A reliable partner prioritises minimising disruptions and costs for the client. They approach every check with the aim of preventing downtime, improving system efficiency and avoiding expensive repairs, whilst mitigating safety risks.
2. Detailed Reporting: After every inspection, a comprehensive report should detail the checks performed, listing passes, failures, and advisories. This report isn’t just paperwork—it’s a roadmap for planning repairs or future maintenance.
3. Collaboration: A good partner will work with you to develop an effective plan based on their findings, ensuring your pump systems remain reliable and efficient. A not-so-great partner (to put it kindly 🙈) will look for quick ways to bring in money - would your subbie be happy to keep charging for callouts on a failing pump or are they willing to look at why the pump keeps failing.
Why Cutting Corners Isn’t Worth It
When it comes to pump maintenance, taking shortcuts or choosing the cheapest provider can backfire in costly ways.
Joe Smith says: "I’ve visited sites where submersible pumps were ‘serviced’ for years. When I explained that we would lift the pumps out for mechanical checks, the client was shocked—they said, ‘The other guys never did that.’”
This example highlights the risks of inadequate support. Recently, we attended a school, where the client faced repeated failures with a heating circulation pump that constantly tripped. Despite ongoing issues, the installers couldn’t resolve the problem, leaving the school with a single point of failure.
Fortunately, the pump manufacturer recommended deckpro pumps. Within days, our engineers identified and resolved the issue, restoring functionality to the system. To ensure lasting success, we provided an advisory video to guide the client on proper pump operation moving forward.
Don’t Wait for a Breakdown
