London Hospital

A client working on behalf of a major London hospital contacted us to upgrade two aging heating pump sets that were at risk of failure - one serving the maternity ward and another serving an entire hospital block. Our team coordinated a simultaneous upgrade of both systems, while ensuring continuous service delivery.

The Challenge

The hospital faced potential failure of two critical heating systems: one serving the maternity ward and another supporting an entire block of the facility. Both aging Armstrong twin pump sets were showing signs of deterioration, posing significant risks to the hospital's operations. The challenge was to complete both upgrades with minimal system downtime while maintaining the site's critical 24/7 operations.

The Solution

Our engineering team recommended replacing both systems with advanced Grundfos TPED series centrifugal twin-head pumps, featuring integrated Variable Speed Drive (VSD) technology. To minimise disruption, we deployed additional engineering resources and coordinated a simultaneous installation for both pump sets. Our Engineering Supervisor, Matt, was assigned to oversee the entire project, ensuring the project stayed on track and passed our quality checks. Each system was configured with new expansion bellows, recalibrated differential pressure switches, and precise operational parameters set to 8m head with 0.6bar differential.

The Outcome

Through careful planning, both pump systems were successfully installed and commissioned within a single morning. The new Grundfos TPED series pumps provide the hospital with improved energy efficiency through with integrated VSD technology, resulting in lower operational costs across both systems. The maternity ward and hospital block now benefit from more reliable heating systems. This dual upgrade project is a reminder of how crucial it is to have the right technical team, expertise and resource on site when managing complex, time-sensitive installations.
